The interactive lecture course offers a broad survey of the development of St. Petersburg and the different constellations of power and culture in its history over more than 200 years: courtly society and political struggles; secular and church architecture; art collections, musical life and academic progress; socio-economic change including the tensions created by urbanisation and industrialisation; controversies over Russia’s identity; discontent and repression, and finally war and revolution.
