This course will provide guidance on sketchbook drawing, to get you started with pencils and charcoal, using black & white and colour to represent different subjects in different ways.

About this course

- Start to draw contrasting shapes with confidence
- Use and explore three different drawing methods
- Achieve confidence to draw in a sketchbook
- Start to draw different subjects from direct observation.

Sketchbooks and basic drawing materials will be provided.

You will receive individual guidance, with brief demonstrations, and some group discussion, to enable you to develop your practical work in the sketchbook throughout the course.
You will be encouraged to do some work in the sketchbook between the class sessions.

Course programme

Drawing from a variety of subjects, including some still-life and some city/landscape, gives you the opportunity to explore some drawing effects such as light/shadow to create volume, and types of mark-making. You will also be given brief introductions to colour and perspective, which could then be followed up in a further course.
Using a sketchbook enables you to make studies of your subjects and explore different drawing techniques.

Additional information

You can develop your work by joining further sketchbook courses. Alternatively, you may wish to develop your observational drawing skills on our Drawing 1 course, Introduction to Perspective or Life Drawing. Your tutor can give you individual advice about other course options.
