Step Up to Social Work is a 14-month, post graduate, intensive full-time qualifying programme run by the Berkshire Regional Partnership.
The following local authorities will be running the course in partnership with Bucks New University:
Bracknell Forest Council
Reading Borough Council
Slough Children’s Services Trust
West Berkshire Council
This course will start in January 2020 as part of the sixth cohort funded by the Department of Education where trainees will receive a bursary for the duration of the course.

Course programme
Students will be expected to complete a minimum of 170 placement days of social work experience in local authorities.
The course will cover topics such as:
- social work ethics and practice
- child development
- assessment of risk
- the legal framework
All programmes must meet the regulators’ approval. The regulators are the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA).
Successful students will qualify with a postgraduate diploma in Social Work and able to register as social workers with the HCPC.
Assessment and supervisionThe local authority will assign trainees to a supervisor for placements and the University will supply a tutor for academic supervision.
