Steps to Employability
A full-time, flexible programme introducing Employability Skills at Entry Level for students who have only been entered for a few GCSEs at school.
What does the course involve?
The key focus is on building self-esteem and developing teamwork. Following an initial assessment, students will have an Individual Learning Plan put together, based on their learning needs. Students are given the opportunity to develop their numeracy, literacy, IT and social skills through a variety of different activities. There are opportunities for teambuilding activities and for students to continue working towards a healthy lifestyle through OCR Sport. We aim to develop creative skills through a range of communication activities.
The skills for working life are developed through the Core Units and practical vocational classes in retail/enterprise, land-based industries, business administration and catering. Where possible, students will have the opportunity to attend a work experience placement. Students will collect evidence of their work and achievements by continuous assessment throughout the course.
What will I study?
Core Units: Getting to Know Yourself; Finding out about Vocational Options; Communicating Effectively; Working Effectively.
Vocational Units: Land-based, catering, retail and sport.
Essential Skills: Personal, social and communication skills.
Life skills: Communication, job search and work experience.

Yes, there is additional support in class to help students with their reading and writing skills.
How many students are there in a class?
There is a maximum class size of 12.
Are there any exams?
No, there are no formal examinations but students are continuously assessed and build a portfolio of evidence.
Will I get any work experience?
Yes, students are given the opportunity to have a placement when the tutor feels it is appropriate. Work experience takes place both on site and in and around Cirencester.
