Course programme

Course Description:

The course centres around the operation of the studio camera mounted on a hydraulic pedestal and covers the following areas:

Studio facilities - rehearsal/transmission lights, soundproof doors, galleries, fire lanes, sets & props

Pedestal - locks, cable clamps and guards, ring steer, base orientation, column elevation, trim weights

Pan and tilt head - chains, frictions, zoom & focus demand pan bar placement

Viewfinder set-up - tilt, cue lights, return vision/viewfinder mix

Camera facilities - comms, headphones, talkback, shot box, external cues

Paperwork - scripts, running order, shot/crib cards, floor plan

Rigging - cable runs, wall boxes, tying off

Working as part of a crew - appreciating & understanding the role/s of other personnel

Shooting - understanding director's terminology, shot matching, vision mixing, non-verbal/silent communication, talkback discipline, shot numbers & calling, floor marks, on-shot priority, moving the ped, reacting to artist movement, anticipating the reactions of other crew members, boom microphone and headroom, lighting and vision control considerations

Live broadcasting - how to cope with the unexpected, faults and breakdowns

Safety - hazard and risk assessment, personal discipline, correct clothing & footware, number of personnel on studio floor, lifting and handling techniques, fault reporting

Delegates will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of hands-on practical exercises, and the day culminates in the planning and shooting of a typical studio insert.

The course runs from 10.00 - 17.00
