The Wellcome Collection proclaims itself to be the destination for the incurably curious. More than medical oddities, the museum offers a range of artworks the deal with the humanity of medicine. From relationships to religious beliefs, cultural movements to individual inventions their galleries are a fascinating insight into the human condition. This evening visit will explore the museum’s permanent collection that holds objects and artworks from the prehistoric to the contemporary.
This course is offsite and is a lecture/discussion held within a gallery setting.

About this course
- List two key artists associated with the museum’s permanent collection
- Explain the medical-related content of at least one of the artworks in the course
- Discuss the role art can play in understanding the practice/history of medicine.
You might wish to bring a notebook. You might wish to buy some of the books on any reading list given out in class.
Please note we are unable to guarantee stools in the art galleries that we will visit so you may have to stand and to walk between artworks. Entrance to the museum is free.
You will be taught with a guided gallery visit and group discussion.

- The origins of the collection, the museum and its founder Sir Henry Wellcome
- Artworks related to the history of art and medicine, including ancient Roman votives, a copy of Hieronymus Bosch’s Garden of Earthly Delights, an etching by Vincent van Gogh, and contemporary works by Michael Landy and John Isaacs.
- How issues in contemporary science and medicine are dealt with by contemporary artists.
