What are the entry requirements?
You are expected to have sufficient oral, reading and writing skills in English to complete written assignments and sufficient comprehension skills to follow written instructions and briefs. You should have an interest in working in this area or already have experience or already be working in the area.

  • Minimum Literacy Level: Level 2

  • Reading: You can read and summarise information by selecting and using different types of documents to obtain relevant information; skim and scan documents to gain a general idea of content and identify the information you need; recognise the writer's intentions and identify the main points, ideas and lines of reasoning; summarise information to suit your purpose. Writing: You can present relevant information in a format that suits your purpose; structure your writing to help readers follow and understand your main points; spell, punctuate and use grammar accurately; construct complex sentences and make your meaning clear.
  • Minimum Numeracy Level: Level 1

  • Interpret Information: You can read and understand tables, charts, graphs and diagrams; read and understand numbers used in different ways; read scales on familiar measuring equipment using everyday units; make accurate observations; identify suitable calculations to get the results you need for your task. Carry out calculations: You can add and subtract, with whole numbers and simple decimals, with or without a calculator; work to the level of accuracy you have been told to use; multiply and divide a simple decimal by a whole number with or without a calculator; understand and calculate simple fractions and percentages; work out the area and volum of rectangular-based shapes; use scale on diagrams; use ratio and proportion; find the average or mean of up to 10 items; find the range for up to 10 items.


What qualification will I receive?
OCNLR Supporting Learners with Visual Impairment Level 3 (12 credits)

Where can it lead?
This can lead to enhanced employment prospects in working with learners who are visually impaired. This qualification could contribute to access to Higher Education.

What will I study?
The aim of the course is to equip people supporting blind and partially sighted learners in schools, colleges and other service providers to:
Understand the nature and implications of Visual Impairment;
Understand and meet the communication needs of learners with visual impairment;
Understand the role and functions of human support in relation to learners with visual impairment and to provide competent support;
Know how teaching and learning methods can be modified and adapted to match the learning styles of people with visual impairment;
Understand the need for a holistic approach to support learners with visual impairment;
And be confident and competent practitioners.

How will I be taught?
The course consists of 60 hours class study and up to 60 hours work experience or private study.

How will I be assessed?
By portfolio, internally assessed and verified, and externally verified by the Open College Network.

What support is available while I am on the course?
You will have access a course tutor. The College's extensive learning resources are available to all students. Educational guidance and career advice is included. In-college facilities for students with visual impairment, the Learning Resources Centre and specialist equipment for materials production. The College of North West London has a Beacon Award for the work done with learners who are Visually Impaired. This course allows us to train our own and other Colleges/service providers to support learners who are visually impaired .
