Programme Summary

The Supporting Teaching and Learning NVQ Level 3 is a nationally recognised and flexible work based qualification aimed at those working with teachers in classrooms supporting the learning process in primary, secondary and specialist schools. The programme is available at two levels and is aimed at those in a general support role and also those with a specific responsibility for a pupil, subject area or age group.

Programme objectives are personalised according to individual needs with day to day work tasks providing opportunities for recognition for those candidates demonstrating their ability to reach the standards required in their chosen area and level.

Programme Content

The programme is unit based and candidates must complete ten units in total to successfully complete the qualification. There are six mandatory units and candidates must choose an additional four units from the available optional units

Mandatory Units

• Help to keep children safe

• Support pupils’ learning activities

• Promote positive behavior

• Develop and promote positive relationships

• Support the development and effectiveness of working teams

• Reflect on and develop practice

Optional Units

Group A Supporting pupils’ learning

• Use information and communication technology to support pupils’ learning

• Plan, deliver and evaluate teaching and learning activities under the direction of a teacher

• Contribute to the planning and evaluation of teaching and learning activities

• Support literacy development

• Support numeracy development

• Support implementation of the early years curriculum

• Support teaching and learning in a curriculum area

• Observe and promote pupil performance and development

• Contribute to assessment for learning

• Prepare and maintain the learning environment

• Promote the transfer of learning from outdoor experiences

Group B Meeting additional support needs

• Provide literacy an numeracy support to enable pupils to access the wider curriculum

• Support gifted and talented pupils

• Support bilingual / multilingual pupils

• Provide bilingual / multilingual support for teaching and learning

• Contribute to the prevention and management of challenging behavior in children and young people

• Support children with disabilities or special educational needs and their families

• Support pupils with communication and interaction needs

• Assist in the administration of medicine

Group C Providing pastoral support

• Promote children’s well-being and resilience

Group D Supporting the wider work of the school

• Provide displays

• Invigilate tests and examinations

• Lead an extra-curricula activity

• Plan and support self-directed play

• Contribute to maintaining pupil records

• Monitor and maintain curriculum resources

• Organise cover for absent colleagues

• Organise and supervise travel

• Escort and supervise pupils on educational visits and out-of-school activities

• Liaise with parents, carers and families

• Provide information to aid policy formation and the improvement of practices and provision

Group E Working with Colleagues (no more than 2 units are allowed within this group)

• Develop and maintain working relationships with other practitioners

Assessment Process

Each unit is assessed through the observation and questioning of normal activities within the workplace and the development of a portfolio within which learners collect electronic, paper and witness statement evidence that they have covered the skills/knowledge required for the unit. Learners are also required to create reflective accounts of their work for inclusion in the portfolio.

Learners who do not complete the whole qualification can gain certification for those units they have successfully achieved.

Length of Programme

We support learners and set standards to enable participants to achieve targets and personal goals at an agreed pace. All learners are supported by a dedicated uke learning assessor who provides advice, guidance and support in the workplace throughout the duration of the programme.

Entry Requirements


There are no formal entry requirements for the NVQ although candidates should already be working in the classroom environment. Personal qualities of enthusiasm and commitment are more important than qualifications, although a reasonable standard in written English and good communication skills are necessary. The uke learning assessor must also be confident that the learner is able to generate the evidence necessary to achieve the qualification.
