This course is for people working in (or looking to work in) in a primary, secondary or special school as a teaching or classroom assistant, exam invigilator or mentor You will learn how to work with children aged 5 to 16 There are two levels to this qualification (Levels 2 & 3), and which one you study will depend on your job role

What will I learn?

You will learn about: children & young people's development; how to support learning activities; safeguarding the welfare of children & young people; communication & professional relationships with children, young people & adults; equality, diversity & inclusion; how to improve your practices (and that of your team) in schools; maintaining & supporting relationships with children & young people; supporting children & young people's health & safety; promoting positive behaviour; schools as organisations; and making displays

How will I be assessed?

This is a competence-based qualification meaning that you will be assessed in a real working environment and will produce a portfolio of work There is no exam

What may it lead to?

This qualification will develop the skills & knowledge needed to be a teaching assistant You may also go on to further teaching-related study Those who gain the Supporting Teaching & Learning in Schools qualification can go on to higher-level teaching assistant status, or work towards becoming a teacher, social worker or inspector

Entry Requirements

There are no entry requirements for the course, but you will need to be employed (or volunteer) in a school

Additional Information & Other Costs

The course is four-and-a-half hours a week, 30 weeks a year, normally over one day a week (there will be some additional study and tutorial time) There is no fee if you are unemployed and in receipt of JSA or ESA (Work Related Activity Group), actively looking for work and in receipt of a wider benefit
