If you work in schools supporting teaching and learning, then this course is for you. It is ideal for Teaching Assistants who have already completed a level 2 in supporting teaching and learning in schools, or if you are an experienced Teaching Assistant. This course will enable the learner to develop the knowledge and skills needed when supporting teaching and learning in the school environment. It is suitable for both employed and voluntary Teaching Assistants. However you must have a level of responsibility in a school as a Teaching Assistant suitable for a level 3 course.

You may want to progress on to the Foundation Degree in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools. Typically, you will go on to work in a school as a Teaching Assistant. You may wish to look for work as a general Classroom Assistant or as a Support Assistant for individuals with specific learning needs.

Course programme

You need to achieve 32 credits from the mandatory units and 12 credits from the option units. There is a wide choice of optional units including support literacy, numeracy, bilingual learners, and disabled children and those with special education.


Course Assessment Method

You will be appointed an assessor. They will visit you in the workplace to carry out observations of your work. You will also discuss your work as a teaching assistant and complete log sheets. There are also written assignments to complete.

You need to complete units on child development, safeguarding the welfare of children, health and safety, behaviour, relationships and equality, diversity and inclusion. You will also study units on schools as organisations, support learning activities, assessment for learning and personal development.
