About this course
2 A levels plus 3 GCSEs (A-C), or equivalent qualifications, or relevant professional experience/experiential learning, or a combination of formal qualifications and experiential learning.
As part of your application you will also be asked to submit a portfolio of your art and design work.

Content
Surface Design is concerned with developing creative visual ideas that can be translated into printed designs for a wide range of surfaces.
Surface Design covers areas including:
- Printed textiles for fashion and interiors
- Accessories
- Ceramic and glass-ware
- Wallpaper and wrapping
- Decorative laminate and floor coverings
Structured within a credit-based framework, the course provides specialist studies in surface decoration onto:
- textiles
- ceramics
- leisure-wear
- paper
- other materials
You will also experiment with:
- screen-printing
- computer aided design
- transfer printing
- drawing
- digital photography
- design crafts
Field trips and study tours take place each academic year to enable students to experience and participate in unique cultural and travel opportunities to exciting destinations. Recent study tours have taken place in Barcelona, Prague, Seville, Venice, Rome and Berlin.
Structure
Year 1
The use of line, colour and tone in screenprinting, printmaking, visual studies and computer-aided design are underpinned by a programme of Personal and Professional Development in the first year.
Year 2
You will expand your design and production in ceramic decoration, textile design and works on paper in the second year. You will also choose from a range of electives and engage in work placements or a study abroad programme.
Year 3
In the third year you will submit a Major Project in the area of your choice. This will provide you with an exhibition portfolio for your degree show. Field trips and study tours each academic year enable students to experience and participate in unique cultural and travel opportunities to exciting destinations.

Comments: This course is taught within the Faculty of Design.
Career opportunities: This course has a good employment record and is well recognised by its related industries. A significant percentage of our graduates find employment in a related area of the applied arts market place. Additionally a number of students go on to study at postgraduate level within University of the Arts London or elsewhere. This includes the study of postgraduate certificates in education.
