Surrealism is one of the most varied and influential art movements of the 20th century. For this two-day weekend course we will investigate how the movement emerged from the context of Post-World War I Paris, Sigmund Freud and Dadaism. We will study and practice the experimentations of its founder and self-proclaimed ‘Pope’, André Breton and discuss how Surrealist theory has inspired generations of painters, filmmakers, photographers and sculptors. We will look at a variety of artists impacted by Surrealism including, but not limited to, Man Ray, Luis Buñuel, Dora Maar, René Magritte, Leonora Carrington, Jackson Pollock, Lee Miller and Pablo Picasso. Part of the course will also approach the movement with a critical eye in terms of gender and sexuality.
