Course programme

This course covers the standards for Literacy/English specialist teachers/tutors/trainers in the post-16 sector. Units covered are: Understanding theories and frameworks for teaching disabled learners (Level 5) Action learning for teaching in a specialist area of disability (Level 5) Inclusive teaching and learning for disabled learners (Level 5) This qualification is designed to enable you to: adopt an integrated approach to the theory and practice of teaching learners with learning difficulties/disabilities reflect on your own levels of experience, practice and skills, and the areas for development identify principles of learning, teaching, assessment and evaluation for learners with learning difficulties/disabilities develop confidence, communication and interpersonal skills and awareness of your professional role and responsibilities The 45-credit Diploma (formerly called Additional Diploma) includes 90 contact hours, when a variety of strategies will be used including whole-class, pair and individual work, presentations, case studies and workshop activities. The course is delivered at our Technology Campus. At least 50 hours’ current group teaching in a teaching and learning environment with disabled learners. On completing this qualification, you will be a qualified Subject Specialist in Teaching Disabled Learners. If you have not already completed your generic teaching qualification (e.g. PGCE or Cert Ed), you will need to complete this to become fully qualified and be able to apply for QTLS.
