Course programme

This course covers the standards for Literacy and ESOL specialist teachers/tutors/trainers in the post-16 sector. Units covered are: English: Literacy and ESOL theories and frameworks (Level 5) English: Literacy and ESOL learning and teaching (Level 5) English: Literacy and ESOL and the learners (Level 5) This qualification is designed to enable you to: adopt an integrated approach to the theory and practice of teaching Literacy and ESOL reflect on your own levels of experience, practice and skills, and the areas for development identify principles of learning, teaching, assessment and evaluation for Literacy and ESOL learners develop confidence, communication and interpersonal skills and awareness of your professional role and responsibilities The 60-credit Diploma (formed from the Literacy and ESOL Additional Diploma) includes 90 contact hours, when a variety of strategies will be used including whole-class, pair and individual work, presentations, case studies and workshop activities. At least 70 hours’ current group teaching in Literacy and ESOL - at least 25 hours Literacy and 25 hours ESOL at Entry Level and at least one subject at Level 1 and/or Level 2. Qualification evidence of English skills at level 3 (e.g. A Level or Level 3 Award in English). On completing this qualification, you will be a qualified Subject Specialist in Literacy and ESOL. If you have not already completed your generic teaching qualification (e.g. PGCE or Cert Ed), you will need to complete this to become fully qualified and be able to apply for QTLS. If you are aged 19 or over and considering enrolling on a further education course at Level 3 or above, you may be entitled to an Advanced Learner Loan to help with course fees.
