This degree provides future educators and teaching professionals the knowledge and practical skills necessary for Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL).
Throughout the course you will gain an in-depth and practical understanding of the Teaching of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). You will develop the skills needed to explain and describe language and you will consider the practicalities of teaching, so you can develop effective lesson planning and classroom management techniques. The programme is organised around four key themes: language description, language teaching, language learning, and an experiential theme.
In addition to studying modules which link to these overarching themes, you will also gain first-hand experience in a language classroom whilst supporting English language teachers, allowing you to apply the knowledge gained throughout the programme.
By the end of the programme you will be equipped to pursue a career in English language teaching, primary teaching, or academia.

Course programme

In the first year you will take a foreign language or study academic English allowing you to experience first-hand how a second language is learned. You will gain practical experience in a language classroom whilst supporting English language teachers, and will study core modules related to the overarching themes.

In years two and three you will enhance your knowledge of each of these key themes, whilst also building on your classroom experience in new learning contexts. You will learn how to describe language and will have the choice of a variety of optional modules including inclusive education and supporting learning in children with additional needs.
