Course programme

Team Building and Development focuses on improving the performance and results of a work group. It is a process involving a series of activities aimed at developing the abilities of individuals who have the same managers, towards a measure of interdependence and common objectives.
The goals are multi-purpose:
  • To improve the team''s ability to solve problems and take effective decisions
  • To replace outmoded traditions and practices with a co-determined problem-solving culture
  • To set standards for excellence against which the team and its individual members can assess their effectiveness
  • To increase the team work skills of individual team members
  • To establish objectives for the team and individual achievements
  • To introduce and develop methods for critically reviewing, on a regular basis, the team''s performance
  • To improve the quality of relationships and communication among team members
  • To assist individuals, and the team as a whole, to examine and clarify team members'' role expectations
  • The amount of time that any one team spends in each of the areas will vary, and will depend on the identified problems and issues faced by the team. Similarly, the order in which the team deals with these areas will vary from situation to situation. However, there seems to be substantial agreement amongst practitioners that all the areas need to be worked on
  • Stage one, Determining the need for Team Building and Development: It is vital the course is not entered into because it is a ''fad''. In fact, in many instances, we have recommended to the client that Team Building and Development is not appropriate for a particular team
  • Stage two, Determining the priority issues and goals for the Team Building and Development activity: During this stage of the process, the team is being asked to answer two main questions: What are the main problems that need to be tackled by us? And in reviewing this list of problems which of them would be most beneficial for our effectiveness to tackle first?
  • Stage three, Determining the action steps necessary to improve the functioning of the team: At the end of this stage, the team has established in detail its proposed action steps; its timescales and implementation plan; the standards of performance by which it will judge its success in implementation and its review procedure
  • Stage four, Implementing the action steps
  • Stage five, Determining the success and effectiveness of stages one to four: During this stage, the team reviews the action it has taken, in light of the targets and standards of performance it had established for itself
