This 30 credit module is suitable for health care practitioners providing care for patients within a renal care setting. The module aims to help you develop and enhance theoretical knowledge and understanding of renal impairment to provide evidence-based and effective quality care to renal patients and their families.

About this course

Renal Anatomy and its relationship to the physiology of normal renal function and pathophysiology of renal dysfunction.
All aspects of Chronic Kidney Disease from diagnosis through to end stage renal disease and the different renal replacement therapies available e.g. Haemodialysis, Peritoneal Dialysis, Transplantation and Continuous Renal Replacement Therapies.
Overview of Renal diseases and other related diseases associated with renal failure, their care and the medical management and nursing interventions.
Contemporary issues in Renal Care e.g. Concordance, Withdrawal of Dialysis, End of Life.
Psychological and psychosocial implications of renal failure for patients.
Current local and national guidelines such as Renal Association Clinical Practice Guidelines, Renal National Service Frameworks, Clinical Governance in the provision of renal specialist care.
Case study and renal disease presentations.

Applicants wishing to undertake at level 6 are required to have 120 level 5 credits
Applicants wishing to undertake at level 7 will normally have completed a first degree or have at least 60 credits at level 6.
You should be working in an appropriate area of practice that facilitates your practice development in renal care.
You would normally be in clinical contact with patients for at least two days per week.

Course Details

On successful completion of the Level 6 module, you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate application of in depth knowledge and understanding of the renal anatomy and its relationship to the physiology of normal renal function, pathophysiology of renal dysfunction and relate this to patient care delivery.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the psychosocial implications of renal impairment and the effects of treatment modalities on patient care delivery.
  • Challenge existing practice and initiate change in the light of current evidence, through inter professional collaboration and reflect on your role as a renal care practitioner in enhancing patient care delivery.
  • Effectively disseminate best practice and critical insights gained from the module to peers and colleagues to improve future practice.

On successful completion of the Level 7 module, you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate systemic understanding of the renal anatomy and its relationship to the physiology of normal renal function, pathophysiology of renal dysfunction and relate this to patient care delivery.
  • Critically explore the psychosocial implications of renal impairment and the effects of treatment modalities and their impact on patient care delivery.
  • Demonstrate effective leadership skills and evidence based knowledge by challenging existing practice and initiating innovative change, through inter professional collaboration to ensure effective standards of renal care practice.
  • Critically analyse relevant evidence based research to effectively evaluate best practice for optimum renal care and improvement of future practice.

A variety of methods will be deployed including keynote lectures, case studies, group discussion, student reflection on practice, active participation, seminar presentations, viva workshops, scenario based discussions, learning in practice, problem solving, directed learning, group and individual tutorials.
