About the Qualification

This Award has been approved by DEFRA for the assessment of the fifteen operator competences listed in the WATO Guidance Notes.

WATO includes those in the industry who are self employed, including independent livestock hauliers and farmers having their own stock.

Livestock Farm Assurance Schemes and supermarkets are increasingly requiring that all livestock within their scheme are transported only by drivers who have achieved the Certificate of Competence.

The Assessment

The assessment is divided in to three compulsory units and one optional unit.

Compulsory

  • Unit 1 Prepare for Transport of Livestock
  • Unit 2 Transport Livestock
  • Unit 3 Transfer Livestock to consignee
  • Optional - Unit 4 Drive Livestock Transporter

The qualification may be endorsed either as:

• attendant (units 1, 2 & 3)
• driver (units 1, 2, 3 & 4)

A candidate must hold the relevant Department of Transport Driving License if they are to drive a livestock transporter vehicle on the road whilst undertaking the assessment activities in unit 4.
