About this course

- the life and contributions of each bishop in relation to the conduct and thinking of the Christian Church in England and beyond- the impact and legacy of each bishop on national life.

Pen and paper for any optional note taking.

The half day course is a mix of tutor presentation and discussion.

BELL: as champion of ecumenism, adult education and the Arts (for example background to using a Cathedral to stage plays and commissioning Eliot’s Murder in the Cathedral); involvement in anti-Nazi movements and hostility toward Allied bombing of Germany
STOCKWOOD: radicalism as priest and bishop, notably champion of (1960s)‘South Bank religion’ as Bishop of Southwark; social and political beliefs (an ardent socialist who was expelled three times from the Labour Party); early advocate of women’s ordination
ROBINSON: academic and priestly career; appointment as (suffragan) Bishop of Woolwich by Bishop Stockwood in 1959; most radical and renowned priest 1960s Britain especially as champion of the unexpurgated version of Lady Chatterley’s Lover and witness for the defence in the subsequent trial; Robinson’s writings, notably Honest to God and the ensuing reactions.
