An introduction into using a camera as a tool. The course won’t necessarily go into much of the
technical side of photography, but concentrate on how a camera can be extremely beneficial to the formation and development of ideas. By collecting typologies, students will connect the outside world with the development of their visual practise.

About this course
Students will be able to utilise a camera as a tool for any future creative based projects, across all disciplines. The ability to navigate public spaces and dissect them visually will be a tool to be used throughout the rest of the course.
There are no additional costs, but bringing a non-phone camera is strongly encouraged for the duration of the session, if at all possible. The off site part of the course will be within walking distance of City Lit, specifically after dark, so please ensure your camera has flash capabilities and/or a fast lens for shooting in low light.
The course will start with a introduction to typologies, and time for students to develop ideas of the sort of images they intend to collect. Then the students will head off site for a workshop. Students will be encouraged to continue utilising photography in this form, beyond the course.

Course programme
An introduction and example-led talk on typologies, followed by a student led off-site workshop, reconvening at City Lit to summarise, edit and critique the work. The workshop will be held in and around Covent Garden, allowing students to explore and respond to the area visually, collecting images around a typology of their choice. Once these images are edited into a project, they can then in turn feed into later development of their ideas.
