Course programme
For any career in fashion an understanding of fabrics is a must. This fibres and fabrics course provides a two-day essential overview of fabrics from fibre through to yarn and finally the finished fabrics, followed by an accompanied study tour to Première Vision in Paris on the third day.
You will explore how the fibre content of fabrics helps to determine their characteristics, quality and cost, how fabrics are developed, their end uses and what to look for when sourcing. You will learn about natural and man-made fibres, their origins, properties and production.
This course also examines the characteristics and qualities of the different fabric colouration processes in relation to quality and cost. It looks at a wide range of different finishes and how they transform the fabric. The different methods of both dyeing and printing are explained and examined. You'll handle fabric samples are shown and terms and definitions are explained to demonstrate the wide variety of techniques covered.
By touching and examining fabric samples you will quickly learn how to identify commonly used fabrics and start to build up an understanding of fabrics, the raw materials of fashion. A practical examination of dyed, printed and finished fabrics is also included.
On the third day you'll visit Première Vision in Paris and have 5 to 6 hours to visit the show. The show is the world's most important fabric trade fairs and essential for gathering trend intelligence. Your tutor will brief you on what to expect at the show, and how to get the most from your day. Exhibitors and visitors from all over the world will be at this landmark established show where you can experience the vibrancy and buzz of global fabric and fashion trends.
