Course content:
The course commences with an induction session to cover the safety instruction in the use of oxy-gas and manual electric arc welding equipment. This is followed by a series of exercises on the cutting and welding of low carbon steel (LCS).
The practical exercises will include:
  • Manual metal arc welding of the joints on LCS plate in downhand, horizontal and horizontal/vertical positions
  • Oxy-Acetylene welding of joints on light gauge LCS plate
  • Oxy-Gas cutting of LCS plate for form straight lines, bevels and circles
  • Oxy-Acetylene welding of butt joints on LCS pipe
  • Bronze metal arc welding of cast iron using a variety of electrodes

The actual content of each of the exercises can be set to take account of any previous skills the candidate may already have acquired. Each of the practical exercises will be preceded by a demonstration of the skill required together with an explanation of the relevant competencies being assessed.
NOTE: Although protective clothing such as leather aprons, gloves, screens, goggles, etc. is provided candidates must have their own workboots and overalls.
The welding and cutting equipment used will be of types commonly found onboard merchant vessels.

Course structure:
The course duration is 5 days commencing 09.00 hours on Monday mornings throughout the year.

Assessment procedure:
Assessment will be carried out on a competence basis which can lead to NVQ element/unit awards. A college-based certificate of course completion is provided.


Qualifications achieved:
Non-externally certificated FE other provision, Level 2, Engineering and Manufacturing Technologies (SSA 4), PW D
