The Internet of things (IoT) is becoming an increasingly popular topic of conversation due to its potential to revolutionise not just the way we live but also the way we work.At it’s core, the IoT is a giant network of connected devices that talk to each other and to us. As an example, imagine a world in which your fridge could text asking you pick up milk on your way home. Or your heater could switch off automatically on detecting that no one was home but switch back on later in anticipation of your usual arrival time giving you a toasty home welcome. The latter example is a nearer reality with the government’s plan to roll out smart meters across the UK by 2020.This introductory course will provide an overview of the IoT, it’s current and potential application across industries and its prospective impact on our homes (home automation) and our cities (smart cities).
