• Describe how the church influenced medieval society’s perceptions of the ‘other’
• Explain the medieval view of sexuality
• Describe the impact of the Crusades on the treatment of Arabs and Jews in medieval Europe
• Identify features used to depict the ‘outcast’ in medieval art.

Course programme
There will be three presentations: Oversexed, Overdressed and Over the Edge: defining the ‘other’; Lepers, Muslims and Jews in Medieval Literature; and Altered Images: the Outcast in Medieval Art.
There will be a PowerPoint presentation to illustrate key points and reading of contemporary extracts (in translation). There will also be whole group discussion. You will be encouraged to share your thoughts and ideas in a relaxed and friendly environment.Additional information
