This is a general writing course which will develop your ability to plan, structure and write a variety of texts. The emphasis will on the process of writing, its different stages, how ideas are put together and the language needed to do this.

About this course

• write a well-structured essay, article, letter and short report
• develop and create ideas based on the purpose of your writing
• organise and structure your ideas prior to writing a draft
• edit your writing to make sure it achieves its purpose
• analyse the key parts of an essay question or task to ensure your writing is relevant
• make an argument with evidence
• write a coherent paragraph
• link paragraphs and ideas
• begin and end a piece of writing effectively.

You will need a pen, some lined A4 paper and a file to keep your work in. Your tutor will provide handouts and worksheets.

This course will focus on the task of writing so students will be expected to complete a variety of tasks as a way of learning both inside and outside the classroom. During the class you will work in pairs or small groups, and sometimes as a whole group. Your tutor will also work with you individually. The class will be interactive and dynamic. You will be expected to do some homework every week and use Google Classroom outside the class.

Course programme

The class will focus on the writing of articles, essays, letters, reports and stories. We will concentrate on:
• developing and creating ideas
• organising and structuring ideas
• deciding what to include and exclude
• how to answer a question and understand a title
• how to make an argument
• how to present evidence
• how to write a coherent paragraph
• how to link paragraphs and ideas
• how to begin and end a piece of writing.

Additional information

There are a variety of courses you can do at the same time or after this one. You could do a Level 1 or Level 2 General ESOL course. Or a course without an exam. These include: Read Well, Write Well, Grammar in Practice (Upper-Intermediate or Advanced), Academic Writing Skills in Practice, ESOl and Reading Stories, English for Business, our Communicating at Work series, Business: Find the Right Word (Advanced). You may also find these course helpful: ESOL and Singing, ESOL and making podcasts, ESOL and Film. Cambridge English: Advanced may also be suitable. Your tutor will advise you on the best course.
