Course programme

Course Aims

Building on people's natural abilities, the intensive foundation course is an ideal forum in which to discover each student's unique creative potential. The course is designed to develop a balance of skills in an atmosphere where the student can work freely, safely and confidently with professionals who care.

During the intensive foundation course the student will have the opportunity to develop techniques in acting, movement, voice and speech. The purpose of these classes is to help free your expressive abilities and extend your range. The skills acquired will be applied to rehearsals where you will be working with a professional director towards a final showcase performance.

No experience of acting is necessary to enjoy and learn from this course, just enthusiasm and the commitment to explore the craft. The Academy of Creative Training and its tutors pride themselves on a blend of encouragement and care; creating an atmosphere in which the individual is nurtured within the context of demanding courses requiring hard work, commitment and an appetite for serious fun.

The intensive foundation course runs over three terms and each term consists of 12 continuous weeks. Students are required to attend on Sundays from 12 noon to 7.00pm and Monday evenings from 7.00 - 10.00pm with a further commitment when necessary during the end of term's showcase productions.

Entry onto the course is by assessment In order to allow applicants the best possible opportunity to be assessed in a fair and fully rounded manner, we ask that students attend one of our monthly Two Week Intensive Workshops in Acting. For students for whom this is not possible, please see Overseas Students, Late Applicants and Exceptions. Students can also assess directly and fully whether ACT is the right place for them. The tutors, class structure and timetable are all carefully designed to be a reflection of the style and content of our tuition and of the rigours and demands of our courses.

The Interview Upon completion of the Workshop, every tutor submits a written evaluation of each student's potential in their discipline. Students then attend an individual feedback session and interview with the Principal. This process allows us to determine a candidate's suitability for training and, in the case of successful applicants, which course is most appropriate for their existing skill level. Following the interview, successful students will be sent a written offer. For Foundation students, this is usually an unconditional offer. We do recommend that all students aim to attend one week of our Summer School as a preparation for their course of study.

Overseas Students, Late Applicants and Direct Applications For students who are unable to take apart in the 2 Week Intensive Workshop process, we offer an alternative application process. Applicants are invited to attend a day long assessment. A half-day Acting Workshop will be followed by individual auditions and interviews during the afternoon and evening. Applicants will need to prepare and present two strongly contrasting pieces. Applicants may also apply for the Bursary scheme as detailed above. Audition fee £30.
