Course programme

Course overview

The Youth Work Agency programme is an interdisciplinary course that will enable you to develop the skills, knowledge and values needed to become professionally qualified.

Throughout the course there are opportunities for students to develop specialist areas of interest in working with young people and their communities. Key areas include making connections between theory and practice, developing reflective and ethical practice and implementing anti-oppressive work with young people. An essential feature is the assessed field-based professional practice in line with the requirements of the NYA and the national occupations standards for this sector.

You will undertake a series of taught modules in the key areas of youth work and youth studies. In addition, you'll undertake an introductory, intermediate, and advanced placement module. All placement modules are undertaken with JNC qualified (or equivalent) supervision. Prior to placement you'll attend pre-placement workshops and during placement students undertake progress review workshops.

The placements are designed to enable you to achieve the full range of National Occupational Standards for youth work. You will be required to find suitable placements, normally within the London area.

The teaching team comprises suitably qualified and experienced university staff and as set out by the professional requirements for youth work. Students are expected to complement formal teaching with guided VLE learning resources and self-directed learning and completion of specified assignments. You will be encouraged to use all open spaces of study available to you at North campus.

The course will also promote the student’s self-management and a reflective approach to their learning with a view to the enhancement of their personal and professional development. Students will be encouraged to develop their C.V. and interview skills in preparation for employment through reflecting on their learning from the taught and practice-based modules. The portfolio components of the practice-based modules will support their PDP as they will provide opportunities to evidence claims for fitness to practice and to record achievements.

Added Value: IT training and the use of digital media form an integral part of your degree.
