About this course

Preferably GCSE Dance grade C and above or dance examinations equivalent in ballet, modern or contemporary. Good written and communication skills are essential. You will also be invited to complete an audition prior to enrolment.

WHY TAKE DANCE?
If you have a passion for contemporary dance and you would like to develop this knowledge and skill, preparing you for further study in this field within higher education. If you would enjoy developing your skills in dance performance, choreography and dance appreciation equally. If you enjoy working independently, exploring your creativity through contemporary dance. If you already attend dance classes on a weekly basis and you would like to develop your current training with a view to a career in dance. If you are committed and passionate about dance, and enjoy spending your free time developing your movement vocabulary and choreographic skills.

WHAT ARE THE KEY AREAS OF STUDY?
Contemporary dance choreography solo/duet/group, Contemporary dance performance solo/duet/group, Dance appreciation and analysis of set works both live and pre-recorded, Analysing the constituent features of dance, (dancers, movement, aural setting and physical setting), Dancer in action for example; anatomy, dancers' diet, safe practice etc, Written skills in the form of essay writing and Research and presentation skills.

WHAT SKILLS WILL I NEED AND DEVELOP?
Your dance skills and movement vocabulary must be sufficient to be able to participate in intermediate dance technique classes and choreograph your own movement material from a range of given stimulus. You must have dance experience preferably in contemporary or ballet technique. You will need to have some technical ability and be willing to develop both technique and choreographic skills. You will be expected to attend weekly dance classes outside college to continue to develop your technique skills and movement vocabulary.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?
60% practical examination - solo and duet/trio performance and
choreography exam.
40% Written exam at the end of the academic year.

PRIESTLEY EXTRA
Oxygen Dance Company is primarily for gifted and talented dancers who wish to develop their performance and choreograph skills, with other like minded individuals. Application is through audition, and is open to anyone studying at Priestley although previous dance experience is essential. If selected through audition, you will be required to rehearse weekly and perform in various events and shows throughout the academic year.
