You will study the works of a wide range of poets from John Clare to Ted Hughes, Basho to Norman MacAig. You will explore the craft of poetry in the context of a highly supportive workshop. You will develop and hone your observational skills. You will complete exercises that will raise you awareness of the elements of poetry in order to achieve a clear understanding oftechniques which will equip you to practise poetry as a skill. You will learn to confront the blank page confidently with the genuine ability to redraft work on your own.

Capturing Nature in Poetry
The aim of the class is to study the works of the great poets as they capture the natural world in verse, then to write your own poetry based on your thoughts and experiences. You will be given feedback by your peers and by the tutor.This class is open to anyone with an interest in poetry, whether a beginner or more experienced. Continuing from the spring term.
What will the course cover and how will it be taught?
- You will study the works of a wide range of poets from John Clare to Ted Hughes, Basho to Norman MacAig.
- You will explore the craft of poetry in the context of a highly supportive workshop.
- You will develop and hone your observational skills.
- You will complete exercises that will raise you awareness of the elements of poetry in order to achieve a clear understanding oftechniques which will equip you to practise poetry as a skill.
- You will learn to confront the blank page confidently with the genuine ability to redraft work on your own.
- You will learn to use some technical language to discuss your own and other people's writing critically.
You will learn by tutor led discussion; analysis of examples; peer review and the completion of class and individual exercises.
You and your tutor will discuss your progress together, keeping an ongoing record of progress and creating a folder of achieved work and a class anthology.
