DANCE IN COMMUNITY: POSTGRADUATE CERTIFICATE
EDUCATIONAL AIMS
The programme aims to:
· Produce graduates who are able to be reflective practitioners with a
critical
awareness of issues central to community dance practice
· Provide communities with effective dance artists and develop the
potential of dance
in community professionals
· Prepare graduates who are responsive to the changing needs of
community dance
practice
· Produce graduates who are effective workshop leaders and
choreographers within
a variety of community contexts
· Produce graduates who are able to acts as advocates for the role of
dance within
the context of community arts.
· Enable students to gain knowledge and understanding of the contexts
which have
informed developments within the field of community dance practice.
· Develop students' awareness of the social, cultural and political
contexts of
communities and the place of the arts in meeting the needs of these
· Introduce approaches which facilitate self-directed learning
· Develop the mature interests, experiences and abilities of students to
enable them
to make a significant contribution to the community
· Develop in students sensitive and co-operative attitudes and creative,
organisational and advocacy skills that are in consonance with the ethos
of
community based work
· Prepare and equip students for a multifaceted career as community
dance artists
TEACHING, LEARNING AND ASSESSMENT STRATEGIES
The teaching and Learning and Assessment methods listed below have been
strategically implemented to meet the Programme Aims and Learning
Outcomes. A
range of methods is utilised to ensure you are equipped for the
multifaceted career as a
community dance artist. Learning and teaching methods encourage
individual and group
responsibility, reflective evaluation and critical thinking. Assessments
require the
application of written, oral and practical dance skills.
Programme Length
Full time: 10 months
Part time: 20 months

Programme Content
Compulsory core modules, crucial to the training of community dance artists,
are based around issues in community dance practice:
Contemporary
technique
Choreography
Choreological Studies
Community Practice
Dance
Teaching and Education
You will also undertake an independent
investigation in an aspect of community dance.
Electives, which you
will study together with students from the Dance Studies Programme, offer
you the opportunity to explore specialist areas of interest and to develop
your knowledge and understanding of what dance can offer.
If you
are a full time student you may take up to 17 x 1.5 hour sessions per week
and if part time 9 x 1.5 hour sessions per week. In addition you are
expected to attend the One Year Programme Seminar each week.
All
students study two contemporary dance styles during their programme. For
part time students the 2 years are designed as follows:
Year 1
you will take 2 x contemporary technique classes in one style + 1
technical training support class and choreological studies plus electives.
Year
2 you will take 2 x your second technique style and choreography plus
electives.
Assessment You will be assessed in each component of study by practical
and/or written assignments.
