What will I be learning?

Taught in a state of the art, well equipped, Automotive Training Centre the learning programme involves you studying both the theory and practical aspects of the following;
- Preparing panels to accept foundation and topcoats
- Preparing and applying foundation materials to vehicles
- Repairing minor paint defects
- Hand and machine polishing
- Application of primers and topcoats

The specialist vehicle body repair centre at South Devon College includes a modern spray paint booth facility and a fully equipped paint mixing centre compliant with industry standards.

Also you gain a broad knowledge and understanding of health and safety in the workplace and other skills associated with working in an automotive garage.

How will I learn?

All lessons are taught in specialist vehicle body repair workshops with the latest equipment, a cutting edge electronic laboratory, ITC suits and well equipped classrooms.

As you learn, you will be assessed in the workshop on your ability to complete set practical assessments and record information in a portfolio. You will also have technical knowledge tests via written phase tests and online computer exams that are graded as Pass, Merit and Distinction to allow you to demonstrate your understanding of the technicalities of working on modern vehicles.

If you can access appropriate work experience while undertaking this award then you will be encouraged to work towards the competencies required for NVQ in Vehicle Body Repair or an Apprenticeship.

What else might I want to know?

This programme will enable you to have an essential and interesting insight into the automotive body repair industry, from booking in vehicles to carrying out quality checks after work has been completed. The Automotive Section runs enrichment trips and activities throughout the year. These include team building events, visits to trade shows and automotive body manufacturers.

Opportunity for you to improve literacy and numeracy is given as Key Skills are an integral part of this qualification.

You will need to provide overalls and safety boots for workshop sessions as well as writing equipment for theory based sessions.

What can I do afterwards?

On successful completion of the Certificate, you can progress into employment as an apprentice where you can work towards an NVQ level 2. With a suitable employer you can progress to an Advanced Apprenticeship at Level 3.
