International Baccalaureate (Group 1) English (A1) Standard Level and Higher Level
International Baccalaureate literature students study a wider range of books than in AS/A2 courses, and analyse underlying themes more fully. There is a particular emphasis on 'World Literature', international literature written in English. Students will be introduced to four genres of Prose, Poetry, Drama and Autobiography. The course will include a wide range of literature from a range of periods and places.

What does the course consist of?
Part 1: World Literature
(Standard Level and Higher Level)
A selection of work in English from outside Britain
Standard Level
assessment will be by a comparative study of two World Literature pieces.
Higher Level
assessment will be by two assignments: one comparative and one which can be creative writing.
Part 2: Detailed Study of a work from each of the 4 genres (2 for Standard Level)

Standard and Higher Level assessment is by formal oral commentary on an extract from one of the set texts chosen at random by the teacher.

Part 3: Analysing linking themes of Groups of Works

Students will specialise in either drama or poetry.
Assessment at Standard Level and Higher Level is by means of the written assessment Paper 2.

Part 4:

A study of four prose texts on the themes of:
  • Women
  • Magical realism
  • Spirituality
  • Identity

Assessment is by individual oral presentation of a topic chosen by the student
There will also be an examination on an unseen extract of literature.

What else do I need to know?
Many of the books on the Higher Standard course are on the Standard Level syllabus, and students will work together on these.
Regular homework tasks will provide the basis for focused feedback throughout the course.
