Course Overview

Qualification gained: Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector

Course Content: There are three mandatory units to be completed on this course and one optional unit in each year. The mandatory units are: Unit 1 Planning and Enabling Learning Unit 2 Enabling Learning and Assessment Unit 3 Theories and Principles for Planning and Enabling Learning The optional unit may reflect the context in which you are teaching, elements related to a particular teaching role or specialise in particular subjects. As this qualification is new, a full list of optional units is not yet available.

Work Experience: You must have 150 hours of teaching practice to complete this course

Course Assessment: Each unit of the course is assessed by completion of a practical and theoretical assignment. These are assessed by the course tutor and internally verified by another member of the team. You will be required to give a 30 minute presentation to your peer group about your learning for each unit during the course as well as submit written reports about research you have carried out.

Progression: This course leads to Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) status, which is conferred by the Institute for Learning following evidence that the teacher is continuing to develop their professional practice.

Homework: You will be expected to spend up to 600 hours of independent study during the whole diploma course. Some of this time will be used preparing, delivering and evaluating your teaching practice.

  • Part Time Course Fee Relate to Year 1 course fees only. Two year course fees will have an additional course fee for the second year; these fees are subject to confirmation annually.

Entry Requirement

This is a progression from the Award in Teaching in the Lifelong learning Sector (PTLLS). There are no other formal entry requirements for this course, however, the nature of both the learning and assessment required for the qualification is such that you will need reasonable literacy skills, i.e. the ability to read and interpret written tasks, write answers in a legible and understandable form, and organise written information clearly and coherently. You will need to have access to 150 hours of teaching practice during the two years this course runs. Eight hours of this will be observed by the course teaching team.
