About this course

- Demonstrate an improved knowledge of the syllabus and its requirements
- Deal with some of the problems in teaching this material
- Prepare pupils for the jazz exams with confidence
- Demonstrate an improved understanding of the jazz idiom.

Please bring the AB jazz piano exam books grades 1 to 5.
Upon completion of this course, you will receive an ABRSM voucher to enable you, or a pupil, to take a jazz piano exam of your choice - valid for 12 months.

Course programme

- Ear training
- Swing, latin, funk and African rhythms
- Roman numeral analysis, chord symbols, chord voicing, harmonic progression
- Scales and modes
- Musical patterns
- Improvisation
- 12-bar blues
- Walking bass lines.

We will play material from books 1-5, and investigate the musical issues that arise. Demonstration and participation in aural tests and quick studies. Listen to recordings of syllabus tunes. Some of the course will take place in the keyboards room so each student sits at, and will play, a digital piano.
