The aim of this qualification is to help you gain business-led accounting skills, giving you an all-round understanding of accountancy and business.



On successful completion of the qualification you will achieve three qualifications from two professional bodies, the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) and the Institute of Financial Services (IFS):



AAT Level 2 Certificate in Bookkeeping

AAT Level 3 Diploma in Accounting

IFS Level 2 Certificate in Financial Education



Firstly, you will study the AAT Level 2 Certificate in Bookkeeping from September to October.   After successful completion of the Certificate in Bookkeeping you will progress immediately to the AAT Level 3 Diploma in Accounting where you will master complex financial processes, including final accounts for sole traders and partnerships, management accounts, spreadsheets and professional ethics.



As an additional qualification you will also study the IFs Level 2 Certificate in Financial Education which has been designed to provide you with the skills and knowledge to manage money and make sound financial decisions.  You will also gain an understanding of the wider realm of public finance and the economy.

Course programme

The AAT Certificate in Bookkeeping Level 2 consists of two units:

1. Processing bookkeeping transactions
This unit introduces you to the double entry bookkeeping system and associated documents and processes.

2. Control Accounts, Journals and the Banking System
This unit introduces complex bookkeeping procedures: making adjustments before redrafting the trial balance,

The AAT Diploma In Accounting Level 3 consists of six units:

1. Accounts preparation
You will perform more advanced bookkeeping functions such as accounting for non-current assets and accounting for adjustments.

2. Prepare final accounts for sole traders and partnerships
On completion of this unit you will be able to prepare financial statements for sole traders and partnerships.

3. Indirect tax
On completion of the unit you will be able to complete VAT returns and be able to deal with the most commonly occurring VAT issues in business.

4. Costs and Revenues
The purpose of this unit is to ensure you understand the role of costing in an organisation as an aid to management decision making.

5. Professional Ethics
On completion of this unit you will have an excellent understanding of the ethical responsibility of the accounting and financial professional.

6. Spreadsheet Software
As an accounting professional, you should be able to perform complex calculations quickly and efficiently. This unit has been designed to develop your skill and competencies in handling large amounts of data.

For the IFs Certificate in Financial Education Level 2 you will study three units:
1. Finance, the Individual and Society
2. Practice of Managing Money
3. Financial Capability, Work and Enterprise.
For the AAT qualification you will be assessed by completing online computer based tests and projects.

The IFS qualification is assessed by multiple choice tests and a case study.

In addition, to these formal assessments, you will complete a variety of progress assessments both in class and using the Virtual Learning Environment.

All full time students at Oldham College will have at least one week’s work experience placement.

The work experience programme will allow you to gain valuable experience and skills to enhance your CV and UCAS statement.


Completion of the AAT Level 3 Diploma in Accounting gives a student 160 UCAS points.

This qualification offers excellent progression opportunities. For example, you may want to go on to study at University Campus Oldham (UCO).

In addition, more than 30 UK universities and higher education institutes offer exemptions to AAT qualified students enrolling on accounting and finance-related degrees.

Alternatively, you could choose to continue your AAT studies at Oldham College under a Level 4 Higher Apprenticeship.
