Course programme

It is ideal to run within the GCSE curriculum as it is aimed specifically at 14 to 16 year olds.

The course takes 60 hours or 7 days to complete and is taught by experienced and highly-qualified tutors. The course is a balance of theory and practical sessions.

By the end of the course candidates will be able to:

  • Analyse their own lifestyle
  • Put together a strategy to improve nutritional habits and become more active

Topics Covered

Unit 1 - The body and how it works

At the end of this unit the candidate will be able to use simple terminology and have a basic knowledge of anatomy and physiology relating to the following:

  • Skeletal system
  • Muscles and their actions
  • Cardio-respiratory system
  • Energy systems
  • Effects of exercise

They will also be able to demonstrate an understanding of what constitutes healthy living, including basic nutrition and the factors affecting health and fitness such as smoking, alcohol and stress.

Unit 2 - How to adopt an active, healthy lifestyle

At the end of this unit the candidate will be able to prepare a personal activity log based on themselves, reflect on the success of these sessions and create an action plan based upon activities available in the local community. They will also consider their own general lifestyle, including healthy eating, and make appropriate adjustments.

Assessments

  • 60-minute theory paper consisting of 30 multi-choice and true/false questions.
  • Assessed personal activity log, which contains a complete personal health and lifestyle profile, personal dietary analysis and strategy for improvement and a program of exercise to improve own levels of health

  • 60 hours guided learning
  • Qualification Accreditation Number 100/5144/2
  • Level 1 qualification on the National Qualifications Framework
