The Advanced Apprenticeship in Barbering builds upon the skills and knowledge that is acquired at Level 2 to develop advanced creative skills. The Apprenticeship is the main progression route for those who have completed an Intermediate Apprenticeship in Barbering but may also be suitable for those who have relevant qualifications and/ or experience at Level 2, but do not have a Level 3 barbering qualification.

Barbering has a unique position within the hair and beauty sector, as it combines traditional skills such as scissors over comb and shaving, with new specialist techniques such as 2D and 3D sculpting. The Intermediate Apprenticeship in Barbering provides the fundamental skills and knowledge required for a successful and rewarding career as a barber.
The apprenticeship includes the following mandatory core units: Provide Client Consultation Services, Creatively Cut Hair Using a Combination of Barbering Techniques, Design and Create a Range of Facial Hair Shapes, Provide Shaving Services.
The list of optional units includes: Design and Create Patterns In Hair,
Colour and Lighten Men's Hair, Hair Colour Correction Services, Perm and Neutralise Hair, Develop, Enhance and Evaluate Your Creative Hairdressing Skills, Fulfil Salon Reception Duties, Provide Specialist Hair and Scalp Treatments, Contribute to the Planning, Implementation and Evaluation Of Promotional Activities, Contribute to the Financial Effectiveness of The Business, Provide a Variety of Relaxing Services.
You will achieve a Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Barbering. Unless exempt on entry, you will also achieve Level 2 Functional Skills qualifications in English and Maths.You will learn through a combination of on- and off-the-job training. You will attend college (Above Bar Training) on a day release basis and spend the rest of your time earning and learning in the workplace. You will be assessed on a continuous basis through a combination of knowledge and practical assessment activities, including assessment of activities in the workplace.
The Apprenticeship has a minimum duration of 12 months. The typical duration for a new entrant to the industry is 12 - 15 months.
Your progress will be continuously monitored and supported by an Apprenticeship Achievement Officer.
