Course programme

This course offers a specialised route into Personal Training. It is widely accepted that in order to progress into your chosen role within the leisure and fitness industry, Apprenticeships are the best option to demonstrate your skills and competencies.

There are great opportunities for career development within this industry as you can comfortably look to attain a full time position in a recognised gym or to explore becoming a self-employed Personal Trainer, establishing a strong client base.

In addition, you will be taught by professionals that currently work within the Leisure and Fitness Industry who have extensive knowledge of both the practical and theoretical aspects surrounding the enhanced developments in line with sports science and the link towards principles of effective and progressive personal training.

Candidates will undertake a range of mandatory and optional components that include:

- Anatomy and Physiology for Exercise and Health
- Evaluate Exercise and Physical Activity Programmes
- Design, Manage and Adapt Personal Training Programmes
- Deliver Exercise and Physical Activity Programmes
- Apply the Principles of Nutrition to Support Clients goals
- Plan, Market and Sell Service.

How to maintain health, safety and welfare in a variety of fitness environments, including the safeguarding of children and vulnerable adults. How to programme safe and effective exercise for a range of clients, the health benefits of physical activity and the importance of healthy eating. How to communicate with clients effectively and motivate clients to adhere to an exercise programmes.

The skills and knowledge required to plan and progress personal training programmes with healthy adults - both individuals and groups. This may include young people in the 14-16 age range, provided they are part of a larger adult group. Client groups covered are older adults, ante/post-natal clients and disabled clients provided the relevant contraindications and key safety guidelines are observed.


As a student of Oldham College you will have full use of all the college facilities; including a fully equipped gym and sports arena. Students will also have access to the facilities of our partnership companies during their training and employment.

Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Personal Training

Technical Certificate in Personal Training

Level 3 Award in Employment Awareness in Active Leisure and Learning

Level 2 Functional Skills – Maths and English (unless already accredited)
