This is a supportive but rigorous workshop for experienced writers, ideal for those who have completed beginner or intermediate fiction writing courses. Students' work will be discussed and critiqued, and you will benefit from an in-depth exploration of approaches to writing and revising fiction. All forms of fiction writing - long or short - are supported on this course.

Students like: "the quality of the writing and the highly intelligent feedback": "supportive atmosphere, astute feedback, chance to discuss opinions"; "outstanding teaching"; "the feedback/workshop structure and interaction with other students; "the hands-on approach"; "good, positive feedback and a committed tutor who was really supportive."

The Tutor: Wendy Brandmark's collection of short stories, He Runs the Moon: Tales from the Cities, was published by Holland Park Press in 2016. She won first prize for the short story in the Bridport Prize 2016. Her stories have appeared widely in magazines, including North American Review, Stand Magazine and The Warwick Review. Her last novel, The Stray American, was longlisted for the Jerwood Fiction Uncovered Prize. She has reviewed fiction for the TLS, The Literary Review and The Independent. She has taught creative writing for twenty years and is a tutor on the Oxford University MSt in Creative Writing.

Course programme

- Constructive workshopping of student short stories and novel excerpts
- Craft issues, which will usually arise through workshopping, such as character, point of view, pacing, structure and style
- The process of revision.

Through discussion, peer evaluation and tutor feedback. All writing courses at City Lit will involve an element of workshop. This means that students will produce work which will be discussed in an open and constructive environment with the tutor and other students. The college operates a policy of constructive criticism, and all feedback on another student’s work by the tutor and other students should be delivered in that spirit. For classes longer than one day regular reading and writing exercises will be set for completion at home to set deadlines.

Additional information

The next step will be discussed individually with each participant. All students are invited to join us at City Lit Talks Back, our monthly performance night for City Lit writers.
