Course programme

- Redrafting and rethinking your own poetry, broadening your range and maturing your poetic voice
- Aspects of technique which you are grappling with in your work or want to explore further
- Exploring some approaches in contemporary poetry.

Tutor led discussion, critical feedback from the class on your own poems, tutor feedback and discussions of theory and structure. There will be no in-class exercises or set work for outside the class; you will be expected to have an established writing practice and be able to bring samples of your poems to the group for critique. All writing courses at City Lit will involve an element of workshop. This means that students will produce work which will be discussed in an open and constructive environment with the tutor and other students. The college operates a policy of constructive criticism, and all feedback on another student’s work by the tutor and other students should be delivered in that spirit. For classes longer than one day regular reading and writing exercises will be set for completion at home to set deadlines.
