Course programme

BA (Hons) Applied Studies in Children and Youth Work

The degree is a combination of practice-based learning and campus-based sessions once a week so that you are able to continue in employment throughout the course. You will work with a range of experienced academic staff and be supported through peer-led groups, directed tasks and interactive web-based resources.

The Programme
The BA(Hons) in Applied Studies is a level 3 (Higher Education) qualification comprising six modules, to be completed in a minimum of one year and a maximum of two years, depending on the number of modules completed each year.

At level 3 (HE) you will be expected to critically evaluate practice through a detailed analysis of the systems, procedures and changes that contribute to your field of study. The programme will promote your professional formation as a reflective practitioner and modules will cover: leading people and teams; understanding risk-taking behaviour; promoting quality; social cohesion; and 'contemporary issues' such as sustainability, immigration and social trends. In addition, the undertaking of an independent research project will support your continuing development as a leading practitioner within the children's workforce.

Assessment
A variety of assessment methods are used including group and individual presentations, written assignments, reports, actions plans, the research project and an examination. All assessments allow you to reflect on practice and theory as you evidence your learning.

Progression
Successful completion of the BA (Hons) will provide continuing evidence for those students working to achieve Youth Work Professional Status (subject to previous experience); and a platform for further study at Masters level.
