What are the Course Details?
The Life and Vocational Studies course offers learners aged 16-18 who have had some difficulties at school and left without qualifications, or who do not meet the grades required for an NVQ 1 or Foundation Level course, an opportunity to develop the skills required by employers.
Is the Course for Me?
This course is a 1 or 2 year programme, which allows learners to commence the course at an appropriate level to their ability and needs.
The course allows you to try a range of vocational choices while studying for a qualification. It develops personal and practical skills that will be useful whatever employment route you take.
What are the Entry Requirements?
There are no formal entry requirements though you will need to complete an entry interview and initial assessment.
What will I Learn?
The course consists of both classroom-based and practical activities covering units that include Home Management; Personal Care; Preparation for Work; and ICT as well as City & Guilds Literacy and Numeracy qualifications.
Learners will also be able to choose from a range of vocational options including:
- Small Animal Care / Land and the Environment
- Motor Vehicle Care and Maintenance
- Business Administration
- Vocational ICT
- Sport and Recreation
- Caring for Older People and Health Emergencies
- Care Opportunities in the Community
- Information Communication Technology
- Catering
- Hairdressing
You will also have the opportunity to complete all, or parts, of the Duke of Edinburgh Award.
How will I Learn?
As part of this course, you will have a mix of classroom activities and practical sessions. You will learn about the world of work and will have work experience to put into practice the skills you have developed.
How will I be Assessed?
Having been assessed at the beginning of the course you will be placed at a suitable level. During the course you will be required to put together a file of work and carry out practical tasks.
You will be assessed throughout the course when you are ready.
What Enrichments are Available?
Learners will have access to a wide range of enrichment activities within the College to develop and broaden their experience of College life.
Are there any Trips or Visits?
Yes. Trips are arranged throughout the course to improve teamwork, confidence and self-esteem.
Is there any Work Experience?
Work experience is arranged in various vocational areas to meet the individual's needs and requirements.
What can I Progress to?
At the end of the first year you will have the opportunity to apply for another level in some or all aspects of your study, to go onto an NVQ 1 or Foundation courses, into training or on to work.
Other Learner Experiences
An Entry Level 3 learner recently completed two years on the course and went on to pass NVQ 1 in Health and Social Care and is now working in a care home for the elderly.
An Entry Level 2 learner recently completed two years gaining practical experience in Motor Vehicle as part of her vocational choices.
An Entry Level 1 learner, working in a small group support situation, recently completed two years gaining practical experience and has been offered an Apprenticeship with a local garage.

Acceptance onto courses may be subject to a satisfactory interview and references. For some courses learners may also be required to pay for a CRB disclosure.
