As an apprentice, you will spend the majority of your week working in a salon and learning in the workplace. You will also come in to college for one day a week for practical training, theory, demonstrations and to work in the College's commercial salon.
To achieve the Apprenticeship, you will have the opportunity to learn the knowledge and skills contained within the NVQ Level 2 in Barbering and gain Functional Skills* qualifications.
The topics you will study include:
· Dry hair to shape to create finished looks for men
· Cut hair using basic barbering techniques
· Cut facial hair to shape using basic techniques.
Extra opportunities
There will be a variety of additional opportunities for you to gain skills for current trends within the barbering industry, for example colouring men's hair. You will also have the opportunity to enter the world skills competition and to showcase your skills at the end of year show.
How will I be assessed?
A Personal Assessor will visit your salon to review your progress
throughout your course. You will participate in the commercial salon at the College where assessments will take place. You are also likely to have the opportunity of being assessed within your salon. Your knowledge will be tested using online facilities.
How long will it take?
The time taken for you to achieve your Apprenticeship will depend on your commitment and motivation to complete your training. As a general rule, this Apprenticeship will take 12-18 months.

On successful completion of the course you may:
Progress to an Advanced Apprenticeship in Barbering or another Level 3 qualification.
Or
Continue your exciting and rewarding career, for example as a Barber.
Achieving this Apprenticeship will give you the equivalent of 5 GCSEs at grades A*-C.
* You may be exempt if you have recently achieved a good grade in English Language and Maths at GCSE.
