As an apprentice, you will spend the majority of your week working and learning in a school, working alongside a qualified teacher and a
mentor. You will come in to college for the equivalent of two days a week to learn about the technical aspects of the job role and to gain support from your tutors.
As part of the Apprenticeship, you will have the opportunity to learn the
knowledge and skills contained within the NVQ Level 2 in Teaching
Assistants and gain a Technical Certificate and Functional Skills*
qualifications.
The topics you will study include:
· Help with classroom resources and records
· Help with the care and support of pupils
· Provide support for learning activities
· Provide effective support for your colleagues.
How will I be assessed?
Assessments are carried out through practical skills assessments and observations of you at work. A Personal Assessor will make regular visits to your workplace to carry out reviews of your progress and to ensure that you are on target to gain your qualifications.
How long will it take?
The time taken for you to achieve your Apprenticeship will depend on how well you get on at work, but most of all, it will depend on your own
commitment and motivation to complete your training. As a general
rule, an Apprenticeship will take up 12-18 months.
Apprenticeships are open to people aged 16 and over.

On successful completion you may:
Seek a permanent post in a North Somerset school on an LSA 1 or LSA 2 grade.
Or
Progress to the Advanced Apprenticeship and following that a
Teaching Assistant graded post. You could also apply to be assessed for Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) status.
Or
Choose to study from a range of further qualifications including a
university level Foundation Degree.
Achieving this Apprenticeship will give you the equivalent of 5 GCSEs at grades A*-C.
*You may be exempt if you have recently achieved a good grade in English and Maths at GCSE.
