Introduction:
This course will explore the social problems faced by individuals and communities and include aspects of government social policy and initiatives.

Study Mode & Location:
This 1 year part time course will last for 3 hours per week. It will be held at Preston College, Fulwood Campus, St Vincent`s Road, Preston, PR2 8UR.

Course Content:
The course will include the following:

  • An exploration of the social problems faced by individuals/communities.
  • The government`s response through social policy.
  • Community initiatives.
  • Welfare provision in terms of the adult criminal justice system, youth justice, housing and homelessness.


Lectures will be as interactive as possible involving contributions from students in discussions, seminars and use of audio visual resources, etc.

Students will need to allow additional time for private study and reading if they are to be successful on this course. Students will be expected to attend lectures, flexible learning and tutorials.

Assessment:
Assessment will include:

2 Essays (each 1,500 words)

A project (a local and national investigation - 3000 words)

An end of course examination.

Careers & Progression Opportunities:
With additional Open College Level 2 and Level 3 courses, students can apply to higher education to study: a Degree in Social Work, the Foundation Degree in Integrated Education and Care of Children & Young People offered at Preston College, Degrees in Welfare Studies, Social Policy and Youth and Community Studies.

This course will also add qualifications to your perosnal portfolio or curriculum vitae (CV) and may enhance employment prospects.

It is recommended that you buy one book (minimum) from the reading list (£20.00)

How To Apply
You will need to have an informal interview with a Adult Admissions Adviser.
Many courses have limited places so please enquire as soon as possible. Following interview, the earliest you may enrol is mid-June.
