Art and Design - Creative and Media Advanced Diploma

Subject category:
Visual Arts

What will I study?
The Diploma is based on the core art and design disciplines: 2D Visual Art, 3D Visual Art, Graphic Design, Photo-Imaging and Fashion. You do not have to specialise in more than one of these disciplines but you will need to participate and create work in all five.

Duration:
The Advanced Diploma is a commitment of two years. It is the equivalent of 3.5 A Levels.

Do I need any additional qualifications/ skills?
Extended Student Project: also on the course you will be required to create, complete and document an extended student project of your own. It is designed to add depth and breadth to learners knowledge and skills in a specific area. The project topic is chosen by the learner and can either be related to a current area of study or to a particular interest independent of the learners programme of study. Once a topic has been agreed by the teacher, the learner starts work on their project, which can take the form of a performance, an artefact, an investigation or a dissertation. This allows the learner a great freedom of choice in both the topic and its presentation. Personal, Learning and Thinking Skills All Diploma students are encouraged to develop Personal, Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS). This involves you developing and improving your abilities as an independent enquirer, creative thinker, reflective learner, team worker, self -manager and effective participator. Additional and Specialist Learning: your Advanced Diploma includes an additional qualification chosen by you in agreement with the college. Your additional qualification could be an A Level, a BTEC National Award or other externally graded examinations by agreement. You can make your learning more specialised by choosing an additional qualification that is related to Art and design - such as AS Photography or AS Critical Studies. Or you can choose a media or performance based subject. Alternatively you might decide to choose any other subject that broadens your learning experience. Work experience: your Diploma will need to include at least ten days work-related experience. This may include working alongside professional companies and arts organisations. Functional skills: also as part of your Diploma qualification you need to pass functional skills in English, Maths and ICT at Level 2. You will not be able to complete your Diploma without reaching this minimum requirement.

How will I be assessed?
Assessment is primarily through observation and presentation of practical creative projects, supported by written coursework, group critique and individual tutorial. Students are encouraged to assess themselves enthusiastically and honestly, and to critique their practical projects positively. You will be assessed on your ability to research the contexts of your work; record, analyse and review your own development and contribution to projects; plan and prepare public exhibition of your work; work to briefs and target audiences; investigate and research creative practitioners; demonstrate a clear understanding of how disciplines, skills and teams work together to produce work in the creative industry. You will also be assessed through your personal response to an external paper based on your practical work. You will be allowed access to your records and notes to enable you to complete this. Functional skills will also be tested in English, Maths and ICT at Level 2.

What can I do afterwards?
The course offers a choice of progression routes, including the possibility of enrolling onto a one year Art and Design Foundation in preparation for Degree/HND/Foundation Degree courses. The one year intensive Foundation courses on offer include: EVOC, City College, London College of Fashion and Central St. Martins. However it is possible to secure direct entry onto University, with students being accepted onto a wide range of Higher Education courses, including Fine Art, Graphic Design, Photography, Fashion and Textile Design.

Are there any additional costs involved?
It is compulsory for students to own an A1 portfolio that holds plastic sleeves. You will require both A3 or A4 hardback sketchbooks and a range of basic art and design equipment. Also, as some of the coursework is photographically based you will need access to a 35mm SLR camera. The costs are estimated to average out about £50.00 per term. It is expected that you will provide your own materials which you can purchase from our Visual Arts Shop. There may be additional costs, such as visiting art galleries.
