Art, Design and Media - BTEC Introductory Diploma level 1(2010/2011)
Study Method:
You will study a range of art, craft and design topics through project work. These projects will require you to be able to plan, produce simple evidence of research, come up with ideas and make a simple product (e.g. poster, model, illustrated report etc.) You will have to work to tight deadlines using private study time as well as timetabled lessons. You will learn many basic skills and techniques. All students are expected to provide a basic set of equipment and materials.
Duration :One year.
Who the Course is For:
This is a one year course for anyone who is interested in art & design and related subjects, has some experience, or who has limited GCSE qualifications. The course gives a good foundation in the art, craft and design areas, as well as the key skills of English.
Assessment:
The art and design units are assessed through coursework set and marked by the course team. The last two units are assessed through a major project. All assessments are verified by a visiting standards moderator. The key skills units are assessed through coursework and multiple choice tests.
Course Leads To:
Successful completion of the Introductory Diploma in Art & Design can lead onto: BTEC 1st Diploma in Art and Design or GCSEs.
Entry Requirements:
Minimum of 2 GCSEs at grade F, preferably in Art/design and English. You will need to bring some art and/or design work with you to the interview to show your current level of ability and interest. During the interview you should be prepared to discuss why you have chosen to study art and design, and explain what you hope to gain from taking this course. You may also be given a short written test.
If you are offered a provisional place you will be expected to attend a pre-course study day.

There are underpinning skills in all areas which include:
- Research into artists, art movements, design developments.
- communication skills; writing for a variety of purposes such as annotation of designs, evaluations, CVs, personal statements, letters, reports etc using correct spelling, punctuation and grammar. Planning and making formal and informal verbal presentations of own work
- Use of IT to word process written work, produce PowerPoint presentations and manipulate images for a variety of purposes
- Professional practice - attendance, punctuality, meeting project deadlines, meeting requirements of a target market.
