About the subject
This is a one year, level two course (4xGCSE equivalent) that would suit students wishing to pursue a design based course. The qualification has four core units and then a choice of two from the following options:

The BTEC First Diploma in Art and Design has been developed in these areas to focus on:
Education and training for students who may go on to a career in a variety of types of design-based work, such as web design, product design, fashion design, textile design, photography, publication design etc;
Providing opportunities for full-time learners to gain a nationally recognised vocationally specific qualification to enter employment or progress to higher education vocational qualifications such as the specialist BTEC National Diplomas in Art and Design.
Developing the knowledge, understanding and skills of learners from a design practitioner's viewpoint.
Providing opportunities for learners to focus on the development of the major and wider key skills in a design context, such as improving own learning and performance, working with others and problem solving.
Providing opportunities for learners to develop a range of skills and techniques, personal qualities and attitudes essential for successful performance in working life.

Learning Styles
A variety of different teaching and learning styles including whole class exposition, discussion and group work. Students will also be expected to develop independent study skills. They will be encouraged to have a degree of autonomy and gain confidence in seeking out information and research material. The courses would be worth three subject blocks of time in the Collyer's timetable.
Subject combinations and progression
This course fits well with students wishing to re-take Maths and English GCSE, but who do not want to follow the other intermediate courses available. It can also be taken in combination with a variety of IT courses or indeed AS Levels in subjects where the entry requirement has been met. Progression can be onto an Advanced Programme at Collyer's or onto the National Diploma in Art and Design at another college.
Subject modules and assessment
Unit 1: Core unit exploring 2D and 3D communication. Internal assessment.
Unit 2: Vocational based study. Internal assessment.
Units 3 & 4: Developing and Making Assignment. External assessment.
Two optional specialist units from the above list. Internal assessment.
The six units all have equal weighting.
