You'll learn about histories and theories of art and design from the nineteenth century to today from multiple cultures. We'll look at a variety of art and design disciplines, from fashion to fine art, graphic design, film and photography, and from a range of global cultures.
You'll also learn a variety of methods to conduct, communicate and interpret your own research. We believe in the importance of hands-on learning to develop your understanding of art and design past and present, so you'll be able to experience a range of creative activities as part of your studies, from life drawing to curating exhibitions.
You'll be part of a select cohort that will benefit from close contact with the lecturers on our course. You'll also be in classes with our world-leading art and design students. You'll learn through a lively mix of lectures, seminars, crits, workshops, field trips and study visits.
Year 1 introduces key topics in art and design history and theory, and core skills to conduct, interpret and communicate research. Year 1 includes our innovative Thinking Through Practice module. Taught by our talented Art & Design Foundation programme team and inspired by our art school's "thinking through making" ethos, you'll experience a range of art and design practices from life drawing to bookbinding. This will help you develop both hands-on understanding of art and design, as well as the skills to be a creative and critical thinker.
In Year 2 you will develop your individual expertise and interests by focusing on contemporary issues in art and design practice and research. You'll be able to choose a specialist area in art and design, such as furniture, film or fashion, to build on your core historical and theoretical knowledge. You will also develop your critical understanding of professional opportunities in the creative and cultural industries, and experience a live publishing project.
