Your Course
This course will cover one of the crucial periods of European History and Art, that of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. We shall be concentrating on the story of French painting. The work of Jacques-Louis David during the French Revolution of 1789, of Antoine-Jean Gros during Napoleon?s Empire, Theodore Gericault at the Restoration, Eugene Delacroix in 1830 and Gustave Courbet in 1848 will be our main focuses. But we shall be branching out to see how other artists ? people like Francisco Goya in Spain and James Gillray in Britain ? reacted to events across the channel. This is a period of great events, huge personalities and stunning art. Come along and be swept up in the age of revolutions!
Later on in the year we will do something completely different, namely, a course on medieval art and architecture. This will cover everything from Romanesque Abbeys to High Gothic Cathedrals to Late Gothic parish churches and should equip you to enjoy what we have from those centuries all about us in a new way.
Optional; Saturday jaunts to places of interest may be organised.
